At the Early Learning Center children develop respect by learning to care for themselves, each other and the world around them.

The Early Learning Center is a unique school for children aged 2-10 years old. At the ELC, we use a blend of the best evidence-based practices in early childhood education and primary education while following the same fundamental philosophy of The Island School and Deep Creek Middle School.

The principles of the ELC are:

  • To nurture the social-emotional and academic development of students through a rich, stimulating, hands-on learning environment.

  • To encourage students to use their creativity, curiosity, and intellect to explore, grow, and think critically about the world around them.

  • To develop students’ respect for self and others by teaching them to care for themselves, their peers, and their community.

  • To challenge students to step out of their comfort zones and take healthy risks in an effort to grow emotionally and intellectually.

With a strong emphasis on the natural environment, we extend the classroom to the outdoors, where we spend many hours exploring and learning. Children in our program benefit from experiential education in a place-based environment.

Dear Early Learning Center community,

It has been five years since the Cape Eleuthera Early Learning Center first opened its doors to our youngest community members.  As we embark upon our fifth year, we are filled with great expectations for a year of new learning, hands on experiences, and tremendous growth.  We are confident that the ELC experience will be challenging, engaging, and motivating for all students!

The Early Learning Center is a school like no other.  At the ELC, we provide students with experiential learning opportunities that focus on the development of the whole child: intellectually, physically, socially, and emotionally.  Instruction and activities are carefully planned to fully meet the needs of each student at their individual levels. The daily schedule integrates students of all ages together for part of the day, while targeting specific needs in small groups at other times in order to maximize learning for all students.

The Early Learning Center is a community of teachers, parents, and students working together to promote each child’s cognitive, social, physical, and emotional development.  We have high expectations for all members of the ELC community and encourage students to push beyond their comfort zone and grow. We expect students to demonstrate respect for one another, adults, the classroom space, and the community, and to always put forth their best effort in everything they do.  We know that together, we can flourish and create a vibrant community of learners.

Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year!

With Warmest Regards,

Dr. Laura Macartney
